Those Two in the Launderette

Her skin was a seed potato with every drag she deflated
herself. The washing machines spun away the clock

tumble dryers grumbled. People came and went,
tipped powder into a drawer, folded clothes for a bag.

She sat in a room at the back while a radio pushed
out songs. Her daughter came too, stacked clothes

and sheets, folded her life into her mother's arms.
Her daughter's skin was fresher, and when she smiled
her cheekbones shouldered up smooth as an apple.
