Victoria Melekian
I'm No Witch, but it Helps That People Think I Am
It's the hair—wavy and white, quite wild
when the wind blows, the soft flowy clothing:
paisley and flowers, long baggy sleeves.
All these windchimes twinkling in the breeze.
I live with a cat who snarls and a dog that purrs,
a blue jay who whirls down for peanuts in my palm.
There are no spells, no lizard tails, no brews or stews,
no candles, potions, no sack of herbs. Just tea
for every sad woman who trudges up my hill.
I pour lemon ginger tea into fragile china cups,
and I listen. That's the magic—letting her words swirl
through the air till she's light enough to float back home.
