The terracotta town
A terracotta town comes into view from the ferry,
This collection of houses on a hill is baked in an oven,
At a glance you see movement in a dozen open windows,
A woman in a shop doorway slaps someone just out of sight,
No children play outside, pockets of adults drink in shaded cafes,
A tooting Fiat passes a donkey and cart going uphill,
In the windless afternoon all flags hang limply, we bump into the wharf,
A young woman trips and is lost overboard,
In the split second before the screams and shouts
I see a kneeling man in an alley kiss a woman's hand.
