As the wave recedes
He surfed on urges for an extended season,
Collapsed with copper lips,
Underwater hear-say,
Veered from trying too hard
To not trying at all,
At some undefined point
There was suddenly
So much to lose,
Deep into the night he
Came to understand
There was nothing left to grab onto,
He reached out in the dark,
He felt the skin on his hands,
His father's hands, his mother's hands,
Gripping tight
Holding his world together.
