Aubade for a Fitzroy Apartment

This morning I have washed the sheets,
re-made the bed, wiped down the kitchen
and kissed each one of the houseplants.
There are gifts and post-it notes left for our host
and I am taking breakfast alone, watching
the streetlights through the window.
This morning the eucalypts turn and toss in the wind,
the wind crooning its way through the half-light
as if it, too, needs shelter. In a town full of windows
and mirrors, who's to say what's not real?
A stranger's house becomes a home I have loved,
and this is love, to leave softly.
