irrelevance of cuckoos

clouds and their blankety-blank
leeched light from the early afternoon
a low growl of thunder took a skid
along their upturned bellies
to usher in a shower short but sharp

for a spell they had sought cover
in silence but already birds
are back to whistling up defiance
of forecasts with mention of further
incidentally sprung leaks in legions afloat

a cuckoo voices doubts but dogs
three in number are asleep in
good faith and agile positions
to be able to sleep with nose stuck
between one's feet renders cuckoos irrelevant
