Tara Montgomery
When You are Old
and understand porch sitting in the rain
I hope your coffee stays hot the entire conversation
that the neighbor kids are welcome and safe on your lawn that your joints stay lubricated
that your loved ones are alive and well
and just down the hall
I hope your regrets are worth doing all over again
that you take up bird watching, cigar smoking, or
stick whittling
I hope you start eating vegetables
that you say new-fangled just for the amusement of the youngins
I hope you have never stopped learning
I hope your memory is sharp, kind, and forgiving
that it remembers when you were young and I was old on the porch in my lap I rocked you in rain
