Pamelyn Casto
Words and Butterflies
(after Matsuo Bashō)
words challenge my poems to describe
the beautiful simplicity of cherry or plum
or apple or dogwood blossoms—
seeing them is always a better
and sharper experience than
trying to squeeze them into my
vocabulary, into my strained verses
where all bold colors drain to black and white
and words undo the wonders of the wordless—
such as the bold silent flutter of butterflies
