In September

My hands have borrowed
stars from the night sky to battle
distances between us;

their shrivelled dreams, worth a penny
I gather from the sun, the lilies of
this valley are born with the seed song
digging into the skin of the day, and night
arrives here with jasmine in hair and
kohl in eyes;

this song keeps us awake, their muted hollowness
surfacing in broken conversations of joy;

September solemnizes the marriage of
words between us- the dog-eared dictum.
