Breakup in Florence

Your left ventricle tearing,
your chest a fist around it, keeps it pumping.
Your feet thump the cobblestones.
The white, green, and red marble walls
of the cathedral look unreal.
Your tears wear through to the sandstone.
You look up to the celestial dwellings.
The Duomo that stood open for one hundred years.
A giant mouth agape to the sky.
Sparse rains on the inlaid floors.
Until the sun poured on it like molten lava
and locked it in gold. You pace and pace,
wound open, flesh raw like Siena marble.
Waiting. Has it been one hundred years?
