John Tustin
The Space Beyond Silence
Outside the door one morning.
I step out into a space beyond silence.
Birds stilled midflight. No leaf stirs.
You will never be coming back.
I look up and, somehow, the sun looks different
As it casts its light down on the spot beside the doorstep
Where the flowers used to be
But are now gone.
There's nothing there now.
A dragonfly stares off into the distance from the nothing place –
Her wings, in the moment, useless.
