Brooks Lampe
Illusion
The illusion of freedom:
an island garden
shining and glittering
on a flat lake
leaving no mark.
Gradually over many years
the birds come
as though trying to change.
The humanizing sun
cannot be trusted.
Not even with whole words.
Meaning is the love of endings,
a boat rocking in exile forever,
a shimmering distraction.
