Rehearsal

The neighbor plays his violin
most mornings and evenings.

Today, thinner than a thread,
a gleaming filament dangles

from the balcony clothesline,
vibrating silver, autumn sun.

Can't be yesterday's cobweb
or the day, the week before;

wind has blown, rain fallen:
in a little while it will break.

A finch alights on the line,
chirps once and flies off.

The note strikes still air;
the music dies in silence.
