A Cautious Optimism

this experiment might have been
a triumph
a warm inner glow for all–
safe in the darkest caves,
tempted by slivers only
of faint light and warmth
gifted from reluctant gods
jealous in their mountain mists

but no
no

experimenters feed on discontent, hunger, and lust
their reach indeed exceeds their grasp
for wilted roses and faded suns,
survives as nervous memories
struggle in the comfort
of darkness
