Dianne Alvine
Invincible
(for Louisa May Alcott)
Orchard House is lovely this time of year.
It looks so peaceful now. It is a comfort
to watch the visitors come and go.
Father told me the other day he still thinks
apples are the most perfect food on earth. I
said nothing.
He was a good father, loving and kind,
yet, his thoughts lived in transcendental
clouds, filled with lofty ideals.
I learned early to stare down the monster
of homelessness, its vile breath always
at our doorstep.
Now, I watch the visitors come and go. I can feel
their struggles tucked inside their beating hearts.
Orchard House is lovely this time of year.
