Robert Nisbet is a poet from Wales whose work has been published widely and in roughly equal measures in Britain and the USA. He is a Pushcart Prize nominee.
The lead guitarist of a rock band, on the main line train to Paddington
We see, from several seats down-carriage,
his fame's effulgence.
He snaps his fingers twice, snap, snap,
for the guard's attention.
When he goes to the buffet car,
there is created a surge of movement.
When he peels open a chocolate bar, neatly,
he breaks segments, snap, snap, snap, neatly,
He often smiles a sweet emollience,
but looks, at other times, tired.
As we leave, he turns to the woman behind him,
slow, heavy, pregnant,
and cups her elbow in his hand,
eases her way to the platform.
