BN Oakman, formerly an academic economist, has published many poems in journals and magazines in Australia, the UK and the USA as well as two full length collections, In Defence of Hawaiian Shirts (IP 2010) and Second thoughts (IP 2014) plus two chapbooks. In 2016 the distinguished Australian actor John Flaus recorded 25 of Bruce's poems for a CD titled 'What did I know?' www.bnoakman.com.

the day
I knew there must come a day
when for the last time
you would reach for my hand
while we waited
to cross a busy road
the day went unmarked
not known to be the final day
until it was buried under many days
when you no longer
reached for my hand
and when at last I realised
the day had come and gone
I was stricken by sudden certainty
that for the remainder of my days
I'd never be so trusted again
