Autumn leaves are beautiful, but dead

Ripple-edged.
Crisped like thin, burnt toast. Crust-less and dry.
A creaking skin.
Exhaling murmurs, gasps from dry mouths.
A message broken and frayed, like ribbons cut against the grain.
Intense colours - a painted cadaver's mask.
Ochre along each lip with a carmine blush;
and henna worked into the veins.
