Carolyn Gerrish lives in Sydney and has published five collections of poetry, The latest 'The View from the Moon' (Island Press, 2011). She teaches creative writing in the community and enjoys performing her work. She is currently working on her sixth collection

in the front garden
the rose bush
reaches triumphantly
beyond the roof
& if you sat beside it
for years you'd never
see it grow –
& those flowers
scarlet lovelorn signifiers
sinking to a carpet
of floral detritus
those same roses
featured in a poem
written years ago
always more to be said
about transience
