Alicia Mooney-Flynt
My Father Ironing
Muscled, he stands
against a kitchen backdrop–
a broken dish in the sink–
his calloused hands gently attending
the button edge
of a new shirt, carefully
pressing the collar, the shoulder,
creasing the sleeve.
All the while he riots and laughs
as if playing some red-blooded game
on the back lawn then joining mom
on the patio for a beer.
