For My Daughters
I promise them handfuls of may blossom
crowns of dandelions and garlic
I whisper secrets handed from Eve
of magic and forbearance
rub their feet with parsley
wrap their bodies
in cloth of violet and sage
I plant a dogwood tree
beside their lives
all for my daughters
when they are born
