Hillary Lyon
That Word
In mid-sentence drops
out of my mouth, shamelessly
tumbles down the front of my shirt,
clunks onto the table between us.
We eye it, embarrassed.
Maybe, if we ignore it
that word will
disappear. But it refuses
to move. It wants to lie
between us, obscenely
flat and colorless until we finish
our coffee and leave.
