Flowers for Ophelia
It is abstract why on some clutches of soil,
no flowers bloom, obstinate.
I lie like Ophelia in the bed of water.
Time goes on undoing my tapestry like Penelope.
I'd rather be Icarus, having tasted flight.
In the harsh strobe lights of hindsight,
all he needed to know was how to swim as well.
Hope can be a Faustian gamble
and no one wins this game.
I gather words into a bouquet, a wreath,
before they shrink into detritus.
There are twenty synonyms for tiredness.
There are dozens of synonyms
for sadness. We learnt these words
in school, not knowing it will be us.
