An Approach to Autumn

The chimes from the church tower unify the village through each quarter
Bringing in that extra hour when time turns on itself to prolong the morning light
Now lost from the drawn-out nights
When those autumn afternoons turn into evenings
And the cold subsides like low tide to welcome the apricity of warmer hues
Streets perforated by house lights against the churning darkness
As the smell of chimney smoke invokes the approach of summers end
My shadow elongated along the pavement
Chasing after me as I chase after it
Kicking up dried leaves in the hope of discovering chestnuts
Feeling the crunch of beechnuts under my feet as I cut through the woodland
Fungi blooming in decomposition of the spectacle
The lichen on the trees like phosphorous sulphide
Making them matchsticks waiting to be ignited by the dusk.
