Laura Grace Weldon
Hats Made of Ceilings
Sky layered with clouds wearing
sophisticated blue and gray shades
like those of felted hats
displayed on an arty boutique shelf,
except this shelf whirls with vultures.
I watch them surf on air's cresting waves.
These creatures rarely kill, instead
purify disease through their bodies.
Mate for life. Live with friends. And up
there, look as if they haven't forgotten
the playfulness lost to us
squabbling carrion makers
who prefer hats made of ceilings
even on a day gloriously gray
and winged as this one.
