cadaver

i have said my father named me with letters
and attributed to my neck, a burden

i walk around not killed by artillery, surprisingly,

but the gauge-piercing eyes that slice me up with finesse
and butter me with perceptions that are ill-mannered

they say that i am a walking cadaver,
squirrel teeth, fragments of post-war trauma, distress

and like death, i never get full, vulture prowling

in all these, i remember my grandma's toast
