Dirt

When my mother flies back
from her hometown
she brings me a glass jar
filled with dirt
from my father's grave
my father
who left when I was three years old
my father
who drank himself to death

I look inside the jar
the dirt is black
and dull — except
for two green blades of
grass
glowing from within, thriving
amid the dark.
