Dan Carey
Day to Day
Wake up, out of bed, get back
into bed, where suicide kings tug
my collar, then seep into cracks
of doubt. Choices get made: to shrug
off what's tough to reach, tip
scales in favor of an easy something
else; cruise control on a loose trip
toward modern icons of Hell.
I've lost hours to that beast
born of wasted time and self-abuse...
hope the death pangs settle west
for a while, rest their weary boots
that mirror these joys breaking
inside, where there's no prop—
until then I'm not alive, nor stalwart
enough to stop loving what kills.
