In the Picture

An
old
faded
class picture
boys and girls in rows
cuffs straight, socks tidy at our knees.
A uniform most uniform, where every body
looks the same. Recall that it was mother who reminded, comb your hair and brush your shoes
as if we didn't know it. So many years later
we're still surprised to find ourselves
stood here, now, on a
new front line
same sad
dark
eyes.
