In Praise Of Common Things
after Laurie Lee

In
fields
the daffodils
are in bloom.
Gaps widen in the clouds
the sky blues deepen and calm the eye.
In the vaporous morning air
washes of sunshine
spread luminous
teeming
light.

In
class
desks are
arrayed with students
uniformed and in regimented order –
like them I'd rather be outside and free
uncaged with the shoaling birds
singing anthems of
praise for
common
things.

Ah
nature.
Common things.
With rhythmic pulse
spring as a power throbs
so deep you'd swear your blood was green.
It's in the great outside
we feel ourselves
and nature
come
alive.

Let's
away
and do
as artists do –
make vital all we see.
Look how the flowering cherries, root and rod
are touched with holy fire
so that blooms
like lit
candles
flare.

The
earth
is blessed
this April. Let's
revel in this emerald world
with trees in leaf, with blithe birds singing
with all the season's flowers
their colours streaming.
This April
Let's
arise.
