Robert W. King
On The National Grassland
I stop in eastern Colorado's thin ground,
the long trailing of dust settling
behind my car, to look where there is simply more,
grass under sky, sky over grass.
A pickup rolls over hill, the driver surprised
to find anyone else on earth today.
I wave to show I'm fine. He lifts his index finger
from the wheel, pointing the way toward God.
