Out There, I Know

There are meaningless days when I stare
blankly at old scenes through the window
of my daily express train, numb to sights
like urban decay and token greenery
in the pots and cracks of the city's back yards;
something is out there, I know, but always
beyond reach because we're moving, and just
as my eye locks on to whatever
it is, it's gone - drabness flits past, flicks,
flies; among the crowds on station platforms
pretty girls like promises pass by.
