West Pine

I lived on West Pine just west of Grand
fourth floor northeast corner Clemens–
Big room enough for three with the Roman couch maybe four
labored , a student, as a failed poet,
frightened choir boy looking to basic training–
helped each other through sickness, ruptured arteries,
lost, spurned loves, and those fun ambulance rides– but
at the end we lost each other and ourselves
in the establishment's stockyard reality that
innocent mad life replaced by a war, grad school,
drugs, and love-the culture we created
more fragile than imagined
