The White Madonna

The white Madonna prays
under an arch of brick.
I am the Mother of the Saviour,
The Mother of God.

A cold white statue
in the frosty air,
but the birds sing lustily
from every tree.

In the time of Augustus
a weeping girl
listened to birdsong
somewhere in Palestine.
