Larry Schug
At Audrey's Piano Recital
The music comes to me at a time my heart is open,
green as new leaves on aspen trees,
receptive to sunlight.
Audrey's fingers dance a waltz on an earthen floor,
the way a gentle wind stirs a lake,
takes me to the high desert, a mesa top,
the view encompassing a billion years
compressed into one moment,
then to the earth that lies beneath running water,
to an Italian carnival held on cobblestones
where all of humanity has trodden.
All of this is all there is and all of it contained
in every stroke of a piano key,
her fingers rising from each note like doves taking flight.
