Directions Scribbled on a Gum
Study the creamy zigzagged skin
Decipher what others have failed to read
Trace the code with your fingertips
Catch its strains on the cockatoo's scream
Probe the knotholes with your tongue
Smear the sap on your belly and thighs
Curl naked in the hollow trunk
Listen to the whisper of moth larvae
Reach your arms up to the heartwood
Cradle it in your hands like truth
