A Lover of Ginger

she took her lovers by surprise;
lured them with satin and alabaster promises
then dug through their skin with claws
of 'when-we're-married' and 'I-want-you-to...'
like stem ginger
grated into vanilla ice cream
but the relationships always faltered;
lovers departed like potato skins
and the dried-up swirls of mustard on a chequered diner table
leaving her to pick up a life she packed
into two suitcases and a carry-on
and leave like a cry in the fog
